The Big Bertha Fusion driver incorporates two types of carbon composite material in the crown and two additional carbon composite pads in the sole. The carbon pieces join an exo-skeleton like body frame made of lightweight titanium that includes the sole and skirt sections. The front of the carbon composite crown features a section of Callaway's chopped fiber composite material that is more than a third thinner than previous versions. This is combined with one part of Callaway's newly developed triaxial carbon material, which is 65 percent lighter than titanium.
New materials allow for improved Big Bertha Fusion heel/toe (or open/close) direction and moment of inertia numbers in the up/down (or loft/de-loft) direction. The moment of inertia is the level at which the clubhead remains stable or is prevented from twisting on off-center hits, resulting in lower ballspeed. That means your misses will lose less distance.

Less important, the engineers increased the MOI by moving the center of gravity further away from the face, while the use of lighter materials in the crown also helped keep the center of gravity lower.
"The idea that we could reduce the height of the CG so much and protect it with such a high MOI was a big deal," said Alan Hocknell, Callaway's senior vice president of research and development.

The crown of the head features Callaway's step pattern, developed in conjunction with engineers at Boeing, as well as a slightly triangular shape, both to improve clubhead aerodynamics. The club features Callaway's eight-way adjustable hosel, which allows the user to change individual loft from draw and neutral face angle settings. "The average shows us one thing, but I think it's important to look at it on an individual basis," he said, noting that 20 percent of players in one of Callaway's tests hit the short version.
The Big Bertha Fusion line also includes fairway woods that feature triaxial carbon weave material in the crown. Weighing just 5.8 grams, Callaway engineers say this fairway wood crown is 78 percent lighter than a typical stainless steel fairway wood crown, allowing for better stability and CG position. Callaway also features Wraparound Cup face technology to improve the way the face bends into fairway woods.
